Student Profiles & Quotes

Akello Nancy Akello Nancy, Head Girl Atanga SS - 17 yrs old, Senior 3
It is not very often you find a girl like Nancy in the rural parts of northern Uganda. Most young girls who grow up around the Atanga displacement camp are unable to attend secondary school for financial reasons and because many people still hold traditional opinions that a young girl’s place is at the home, not at school. Nancy has not let this conventional norm stop her from dreaming big. She aspires to continue with her schooling all the way to the university level. If that isn’t enough determination, she is equally committed to finding an end to the conflict in northern Uganda by becoming a Member of Parliament. When she is not studying hard to make this dream a reality, she is hanging out with friends and keeping up with current events by reading the newspaper. Over the past couple years, she has seen great improvements to Atanga—not just at the school, but within the entire community as well. She feels the work Schools for Schools has done has reached great heights and she cannot wait to see the continuation of such a positive force of development.

Onencen Patrick Onencen Patrick, Head Boy Atanga SS - 17 yrs old, Senior 4
Patrick walks at least a kilometer each day to and from the camp in Atanga to reach his school. He laughed when asked about riding a bike to school and said that no students have bicycles but that he is lucky; some students are forced walk two or three times further. With his huge, welcoming smile, it is clear to see why students chose Patrick as their Head Boy of Atanga SS. He is involved in Peace Club, Straight Talk club- where he engages the community on the importance of education, especially for females- and the Scripture Union. Patrick is also on the Debate Team and plays football and volleyball. He is studying physics in order to one day work in a lab and research new cures for diseases. In his free time, he reads stories, listens to music and jogs. When he first came to Atanga, there was only one classroom block, temporary structures, and no desks. The students were few and had little motivation to study, but things have changed immensely in the last few years, and he’s seen improvements across the board at Atanga, for which he is thankful to be a part of.

School History

Atanga Secondary Schools was founded in 1982 with the motto “education for leadership”. Atanga Senior Secondary School is located in Pader District, which is closer to Sudan and rebel bases than the area of Gulu. Because of this, the administration at Atanga SS had to request fulltime UPDF troops to guard the school. The school has been greatly affected by the 23-year-long war in northern Uganda and has been displaced three times, totaling 13 of its 27 years of existence. Most of the 389 students live in the neighboring Atanga internally displaced camp and walk one and a half kilometers to school. Despite the obstacles of disease and distance from home to school, Atanga’s students consistently receive satisfactory scores on national exams.

To date, support from Schools for Schools has helped Atanga with some of its highest priorities. Previously there was one school building that was built in 1983, which consisted of four incomplete and severely damaged classrooms. Bricks were broken around the non-existent windows, and there was no plaster or verandas. There were also no doors, preventing the classrooms from being secure at night. The average classroom consisted of 50-60 students per teacher with an average of four students per desk. Some classes were being held in storerooms. The latrines were waterlogged due to poor drainage and posed a great health risk.

With your support we constructed two dual classroom blocks, renovated the four classrooms, supplied them with furniture and a basic supply of textbooks, and refurbished an administration block. We have also drilled a new borehole, replacing the old one that was located downhill from the latrines and posed a risk for contamination. An additional two blocks of five-stance of eco-san latrines have been completed and a generator has been installed to provide a secure and regular power supply. We have also continued to invest in teacher training, including school development planning, monitoring and evaluation, psychosocial support for guidance, and counseling teachers. Furthermore, we provide training for financial management and planning, record keeping, and computer literacy programs.

Work is currently underway for the construction of two additional blocks of eco-san latrines. Underground cabling is being laid to connect the recently supplied generator to all the classrooms and other facilities. These projects will complement the two-story administration block that we will break ground on in the upcoming months.
