Student Profiles & Quotes

Ocen Tobias Ocen Tobias, Head Boy Awere SS - 18 years old, Senior 5
Tobias joins Awere SS this year as its last Head Boy to preside over the displaced site. The school has occupied its ‘temporary’ location for over 18 years now and intends to move back to the original site at the start of next year. He formerly attended Pope Paul VI Anaka- another S4S partner- for one year, and has moved schools multiple times because of financial problems. But he doesn’t think he’ll be leaving Awere like he left the others. He’s determined to continue his studies of History and Economics so that he can major in Philosophy and focus on political operations and equality at university. Committed to justice, it’s no surprise he’s a leader of his class and excels at debate. He’s excited to finally see the return of Awere to its original site and believes that the new classrooms and supplies will be offer a more conducive environment for improving academics and student behavior. He appreciates so much what the fundraisers have done for Awere, and knows that many students will be happy to return to the original site because it is their home- and they have been away from home for too long.

Apiyo Jennifer Opobo Apiyo Jennifer Opobo, Prefect Awere SS - 18 yrs old, Senior 3
Born way out in the country, in a small village far from Gulu, Jennifer says she experiences the best of both worlds. She’s able to enjoy the peace and quiet of village life with her family during the school holidays, but she is also able to appreciate the development of Gulu town when school is in session. She feels Awere SS is a big family and thinks the structures and teachers create a very positive environment. Jennifer enjoys studying Chemistry and Biology the most, and hopes that she’ll do well enough in her exams to one day become a nurse, or even a doctor. She’s involved in the Young Christian Students association and holds the role of Speaker for the English Club on campus. When she was given the opportunity to visit the original site of Awere SS last year, she thought it was almost too beautiful. She cannot believe she will have the opportunity to be part of such a remarkable return. She wants to thank all of the fundraisers, for what they’ve done for her school and for challenging her to do her best in her studies.

School History

Awere Secondary School was founded in 1982 and has since spent 17 years at a displaced location. Many of the 890 students live in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps and walk miles upon miles to attend school every day. Some students live in hostels while others live with friends or relatives, leaving their families for the opportunity to receive education. A large percentage of the students are orphans, formally abducted LRA soldiers, or child mothers, and several suffer from HIV/AIDS. The facilities and infrastructure at the temporary site in Awere are inadequate and in disrepair. The classrooms are constructed out of split logs and wire, providing no protection from wind, dust, and rain. Termites infest the wood, there are no sturdy walls and the dirt floors become extremely muddy in the rainy season and dusty in the dry season. Awere’s original site is deep in the jungles of northern Uganda, and only a few bare structures remained before we began construction.

We have completed three fully furnished classroom blocks at the school’s original site since the first round of Schools for Schools. A much needed laboratory block has been constructed and accompanying equipment supplied. A motorized borehole now supplies the entire school with clean water and all of the buildings on campus now benefit from a generator and wiring system providing a regular and safe power supply.

A limited amount of core texts and scholastic materials have been delivered, with more books and sports equipment on the way. We have also been able to assist the staff by supplying them with a limited number of textbooks and by arranging teacher trainings, psychosocial support for guidance counselors, financial management, record keeping and computer literacy trainings. We are currently finalizing the plans for a girls’ dormitory to be built, which we hope to complete using funds from Rounds III and IV. To augment the work that S4S has implemented, the dedicated Head Teacher Mr. Matthew Ottober has mobilized the school community to invest in the construction of an administration block and the beginnings of on-site teachers housing.

The school development committee has requested that the funds from Round IV be put towards the completion of the girls’ dormitory first, but thereafter for S4S to commit to constructing another dorm and more classrooms. In February of 2010, Awere will reopen at its original site. The future for looks bright for Awere, but much work remains in getting there.
