Pabbo Secondary School

Founded in 1980, Pabo SS was displaced in 1996 because of the war. Several students were abducted two years later after the school returned to its original site. Today, many of the students are former LRA soldiers, orphans or suffer from HIV/AIDS.

Student Profiles & Quotes

Akot Proscovia Akot Proscovia, Head Girl Pabo SS - 18 yrs old, Senior 3
Out of about 475 students at Pabo SS, Proscovia is one of 70 girls that are lucky enough to be supported in their pursuit for higher education as most girls in the area either marry very young or are forced to stay at home to help with the cooking and cleaning. Proscovia’s job as Head Girl is to counter the general stereotype that it is less important to educate girls. She is constantly giving advice to her fellow females to encourage them to continue with their studies and not drop out, despite the odds. She herself thought she would no longer be able to afford her education when she lost both of her parents and all of her siblings to AIDS. She now lives with her grandmother and struggles to support herself when school is out of session. Nevertheless, she has high aspirations of becoming a nurse. In her free time, she plays football with the girls of her class and reads. Proscovia appreciates so much what the students abroad are doing to improve the standards of Pabo. She sends her greetings and words of encouragement to continue giving girls like her the chance to receive an education.

Ocan Benson Ocan Benson, Head Boy Pabo SS - 17 yrs old, Senior 3
Benson is an orphan and must work hard to pay his school fees. As Head Boy, Benson is in charge of mobilizing all the classes, helping control the behavior of students and serving as the communication liaison between the student body and the administration. He loves studying History, Geography and Christian Studies the most. If he is able to continue to university, he hopes to one day become a lawyer. Benson is also involved in the Peace Club at school, which aims to bring peace to the community through sensitizing dramas and dances. In his free time, you can find him playing volleyball with the school team, reading, and hanging out with friends. He’s seen a lot of changes at Pabo: the differences between the old and the new classrooms and the addition of books and lab equipment have all left a lasting impression on the students. He smiles because he sees how much more the students are able to enjoy academics because of simple things like chemicals for performing science labs. Benson firmly believes in two years time, Pabo SS will be just as good as any school in Kampala. We share his confidence in the future.

School History

Pabo Secondary School was founded in 1980 by the Ugandan government and was displaced because of the war in 1996. In 1998, Pabo’s 561 students and 23 staff members were able to return to the original site. Regrettably, there have been student abductions since the school was opened. The largest IDP camp in northern Uganda, Pabo IDP camp, is near the school and is home to 64,000 people. All of Pabo’s students live in that camp and walk two miles to class daily. Prior to the conflict, Pabo was a boarding school but now the school is unable to allow students to live on campus. Many of the students are formerly abducted LRA soldiers, orphans, child mothers, and several suffer from HIV/ skin diseases. AIDS. The average class size is 65, yet the existing classrooms are only built to hold 44. Malaria is growing more and more common among Pabo students and many already have it.

For its 561 students, Pabo had only seven classrooms, all of which were in ill repair with one borehole and three latrines. We have been able to construct three furnished dual classroom blocks with rainwater harvesting systems integrated into the roof structures. A new six-stance latrine for the female students has been completed, along with hand washing facilities. As Pabo is not on the national power grid, we added a generator that powers every building on the campus.

We have supplied a limited quantity of core texts in the main compulsory subjects and are pleased to continue to assist in teacher training and support by providing leadership, school development planning, monitoring and evaluation, psychosocial support, financial management and planning, record keeping, and computer literacy trainings.

Plans for the near future include a fully furnished laboratory block. Due to the large financial commitment, this project will be phased using Round III money to complete the core structure of the building and pending Round IV funds to complete and furnish it. We plan to break ground soon, completing Phase 1 before the end of the year. Pabo will also continue to benefit from the support of teacher training, supply of scholastic materials and sport equipment and the new emotional literacy program being implemented on a pilot basis in select S4S partner schools.
